The Whale Rider
A young mother dies in childbirth along with her newborn male son, who was supposed to be the Whangara tribe's next leader. His twin sister, Pai (Keisha Castle-Hughes), manages to survive and is brought up by her grandparents. She enlists the help of her uncle to teach herself the art of chiefdom and it appears that she possesses a natural leadership ability.
Dogville

Arriving in the small town of Dogville in the Rocky Mountains in the 1930s, fugitive Grace (Nicole Kidman) offers her services to the people of the town in return for a safe place to hide. The townsfolk reluctantly agree to shelter Grace for two weeks.
But as it becomes increasingly dangerous to harbour her, they come to expect favours from Grace, and the more she gives, the greater her obligations become...
The Pianist
Roman Polanski directs this drama portraying the true story of pianist Wladyslaw Szpilman (Adrien Brody)'s experiences in Warsaw during the Nazi occupation. When the Jews of the city are forced into a ghetto, Szpilman finds work playing in a café. After his family is deported in 1942, he stays behind, working as a labourer before going into hiding in the ruins of the war-torn city.
With the Nazis closing in on him, Szpilman must endure an arduous cat-and-mouse game which will test his will to survive.
