This volume features 288 short articles, from 400 to 2300 words in length, that profile more than 276 species of animals, over half a dozen plant species, several types of algae and fungi, and several ecosystems that support a variety of wildlife. It is organized in chapters corresponding to the months of the year, although there is little correlation between the focus of each article and the month in which it is grouped. A 13th chapter entitled "Breaking the Pattern" is a catch-all, covering topics, such as the El Nino phenomenon, that do not follow the calendar. The book's most useful feature is its collection of over 700 color photographs of animals, insects, fish, snakes, plants, and so forth. In addition to the conventional index, which also contains charts comparing animals by weight and speed, a 60-page section entitled "How Animals Spend the Year" summarizes the life cycle of each of the species discussed in detail throughout the book and presents data in a seasonal format with a color photo. This section also serves as an index, since it gives page references to the main entry for each animal or plant. Appropriate for libraries looking for superficial coverage of a lot of animals and plants rather than detailed information on any one group of species.-- Laurie Tynan, Montgomery Cty.
