Gilbert is a young man who lives in Endora, Iowa, population 1091. Gilbert lives with his mother, whose five hundred pound frame is slowly destroying the fragile Grape homestead. Gilbert also lives with this brother Arnie, who is nearly 18 but was never expected to survive childhood, his older sister, Amy, who only smiles when something goes wrong, and Ellen, the youngest who just wants to get a suntan.

Gilbert's best friends are Tucker, who sees the soon to be opened fast food joint as his ticket to wealth and real milkshakes, and Bobby, the undertaker's boy whose father makes him drive the hearse. Gilbert works at the old Lamson Grocery - not the new Super Food Land, which he despises; and he is having an affair with Mrs Betty Carver, whose husband desperately wants to sell Gilbert some insurance.

Gilbert's life is weird, and he doesn't seem to enjoy it! But oneday, a mysterious, beautiful girl from Michigan named Becky moves into town and Gilbert's life begins to change.
