" Here is history imaginatively treated, in the story of slavery in Cape town between 1658 with the first importation from central Africa, and 1834, the year of emancipation. This fascinating narrative, founded on fact gives a vivid picture of life at the Cape in its early days. The picture is grim when it portrays the loose discipline of the Slave Lodge ( once a brothel for visiting seamen, now the Old Supreme Court at the top of Adderley Street), and the brutal justice meted out to all criminals, both freemen and slaves, in those harsh times; but the happier side of our forbears' existence is reflected here too. These cameos of the Cape Town of 150 and more years ago are literary gems, and the writers gift fro creating atmosphere has never been better displayed.

Into the historical story are woven the loves and sufferings of a long line of slaves and their owners, their experiences based on actual records in the archives of the Cape."
