" Gareth Patterson describes himself as "a child of Africa".
He was born in England in 1963 but grew up in Nigeria and Malawi where, at an early age, his love for African wildlife was born.
His adult life has been entirely devoted to his early passion: he has worked as a game ranger in the Sabi Sand Game reserve and as a trail officer in the Ntal Drakensburg. In 1983 he moved to the Northern Tuli Game Reserve in Botswana. It was during this time that his his fascination with the lion matured into an abiding interest. His studies of the lion populations in the reserve were the subject of his first book, Cry for the Lions.
After completing the journey which is chronicled in Where the Lion Walked, he worked for some months with the legendary George Adamson on his lion rehabilitation programme at Kora in Kena. After Adamson's tragic murder by Somali ivory poachers, Pattersn obtained permission from the Botswana Government to relocate Adamson's last three lion cubs to the Northern Tuli Game Reserve to work for their ultimate re-introduction to the wild as part of a Tuli Lion Trust project. As Adamson had so strongly wished Gareth Patterson is continuing his work - and seems destined to become his successor as the "Lion Man" of Africa.
