The hardy White Mulberry is an ornamental as well as a tasty fruit bearing tree. It has a crooked, wide-spreading habit with fruits typically a mix of 1¿ white, pink, red and purple. The white mulberry is so named for the colour of its buds, rather than the colour of its fruit. It is the most cold-hardy of the species. The White Mulberry is a medium to large sized deciduous tree usually 30 to 50 feet, but can reach 70 feet. Mulberries prefer deep, rich soils, but they will tolerate thin gravelly soil, rocky slopes, dry sites and other difficult areas, such as wet or alkaline soils. The berry-like fruit have a unique tart-sweet taste. Makes a great bonsai specimen as well.
