Wild rocket (\(Diplotaxistenuifolia\)) is a perennial leafy green in the mustard family, known for its strong, peppery flavour. Also called perennial wall-rocket or Sylvetta arugula, it is more pungent and intense than its milder cousin, common rocket (\(Erucasativa\)).
Appearance
Leaves: Wild rocket has smaller, more deeply lobed, and serrated dark green leaves compared to common rocket.
Flowers: It produces bright yellow, edible flowers.
Plant size: This hardy perennial grows up to 40 cm tall and is slower growing than common rocket.
Flavour and culinary uses
Flavour profile: Wild rocket is prized for its strong, distinctive peppery and nutty taste. As the plant matures, the leaves become even more pungent.
Raw: It is commonly used raw in salads to add a spicy kick, particularly in gourmet salad mixes.
Cooked: Its bold flavour stands up well to cooking and can be added to pasta dishes, soups, stir-fries, and as a topping for pizza.
Other uses: The leaves can be used to make pesto, and the flowers serve as an edible garnish.
