In his account Noyce account communicates all the drama, excitement and vitality of one of the greatest feats of exploration of all time. Noyce uses his detailed personal diaries with many black and white and colour photos and drawings to tell his view of the first ascent of Mount Everest by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay on May 29, 1953. Wilfred Noyce and Sherpa Anulla pushed the route to the South Col on May 21, 1953. The title comes about because Noyce was the first member of the 1953 Everest expedition to accomplish the ascent of the South Col, the small plateau just below the summit, from which Hillary & Tenzing Norgay set out to conquer the world's highest mountain.
