William Kentridge exhibition marks the first-ever partnership between the Taipei Fine Arts Museum and the Royal Academy of Arts in the UK to present a comprehensive exploration of William Kentridge's artistic journey spanning over 40 years. This exhibition, the largest solo exhibition of the artist ever held in Taiwan, aims to provide a close encounter with Kentridge's rich artistic universe, offering them a deeper understanding of South Africa, the spiritual homeland that nourishes his creative roots, along with the history and land of that nation.
William Kentridge describes his studio as a dynamic space where the world converges. It's a hub of creative activity, where images, thoughts, and conversations intersect. The studio walls are adorned with images, art-historical references, and film inspirations, reflecting the constant influx of information and ideas. This physical space mirrors the mental process of combining new information with existing knowledge, making sense of the world through association and synthesis. In this studio, Kentridge's creative process unfolds, allowing images and text to collide, ideas to cross-pollinate, and mediums to inform one another. Throughout his oeuvre, text plays a constant role, juxtaposed with images to suggest multiple meanings without dictating a single interpretation. This layering of image and text invites the viewer to engage actively, making sense of the work in their own way.
William Kentridge is a South African artist known for his prints, drawings, and animated films. He was born in Johannesburg in 1955 and studied at the University of the Witwatersrand and the Johannesburg Art Foundation. Kentridge's work often explores the political and social issues of his native South Africa, as well as broader themes of time, memory, and history. He is considered one of the most important contemporary artists working today.
