The image is taken from William Kentridge's artwork 'Enough Of This Scandal' 2020, India ink on found encyclopedia paper adhered to cotton cloth, 250cm x 201cm
William Kentridge describes his studio as a place where the outside world constantly flows inthrough books, films, conversations, memories, and fragments of images that gather on the wallsbecoming a living map of how thought and perception intersect. This environment of overlap and exchange provides the ground for his practice, allowing texts, visuals, and ideas to merge and reshape each other. Out of this process came Enough of This Scandal (2020), created during South Africas national lockdown, and continuing Kentridges much-recognized series of Indian ink flower drawings layered onto vintage encyclopedia pages. In this work, the interplay of image and text does not resolve into one definitive statement; instead, it generates an open field of meaning, inviting viewers to actively interpret the tension between word and image, and to reflect on how knowledge, memory, and imagination are continually recombined.
This exhibition marks the first-ever partnership between the Taipei Fine Arts Museum and the Royal Academy of Arts in the UK to present a comprehensive exploration of William Kentridge's artistic journey spanning over 40 years. This exhibition, the largest solo exhibition of the artist ever held in Taiwan, aims to provide a close encounter with Kentridge's rich artistic universe, offering them a deeper understanding of South Africa, the spiritual homeland that nourishes his creative roots, along with the history and land of that nation.
