This is an interesting Victorian watercolour by a recognised South African artist. It is hand signed and dated 1893. In the signature the artist spells his surname Westhofen.
I am 99% sure that it is Langebaan. Perhaps you can recognise some of the features.
We see two boats in the lagoon with their shadows . The jetties look a lot like the Langebaan yacht club looks today.
There are some signs of aging including a bit of discolouration ( see photos ) but the image, painterly skill, features depicted, and the sunset can still be enjoyed.
This picture is complete but needs a new mount and frame to do it justice.
Painting is 35 cm x 23 cm.
The artist was born in Cape Town in 1842. He was a painter of landscapes and did the illustrations for a book called The Cape Peninsula, Pen and Colour Sketches which was written by Rene Juta.
He exhibited at the second ever exhibition of SASA ( South African Society of Artists ) in 1903. He also worked for the Cape Government as an engineer.
