About the Artist

Cecil Byrnes started art classes with Stephanie Watson in the 80’s. Stephanie Watson is listed in Art and Artists South Africa(Esme Berman) with Walter Batiss as the pioneers of Serigraphy in South Africa. In the early 90’s he enrolled at UNISA for a Degree in Visual Arts which was completed in 2000. The concept of his was the power of Male Clothing. An exhibition at Raw Vision Cape Town in 2009 of drawings with a review by Janet Botes on her blog illustrates this actuality.

At the time he had 3 children at Stellenbosch University so he forsook the Academic Art route and started selling paintings at various Markets around Cape Town. All the children and grandchild(ren) live and work in Australia. The eldest and her husband have specialised in Rural Medicine and busy specialising as General Practitioners(a condition in Australia), the second a Gynaecologist and the son a Teacher/Lecturer for Queensland Legal Aid.

He was quickly discovered by a couple of Galleries (Stellenbosch, Franschoek, Durbanville, Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town) and being a prolific Artist sold paintings that were acquired by collectors in South Africa and every Continent except South America. Top Billing Presenter/Producer bought 3 paintings while doing a shoot at a Gallery in Franschhoek and a former Minister of Finance also bought 3 paintings at the same time in 2005. Many commissions were done, Guest Houses and properties in Cape Town(Old Mutual Building Cape Town), and the surrounding areas, the most recent for a Medical Care Specialist in Cape Town.

He also did many Festivals including Whale Festival Hermanus, Olive Festival Riebeeck West, Rose Festival Elgin and the Stellenbosch Slow Market.

From 2010 for three years he worked as a Volunteer for Top Banana, an NGO in Tseshebe Botswana. The village is situated 50kms north of Francistown and there he was involved with Children and Venerable children, overseeing the care and assistance of local

Care-givers and Volunteers.  He gave art lessons to the children including learners from the Tseshebe Primary School who won a Trophy in 2012 for a School Competition for the North West District. Included in duties was HIV awareness and support. At present he is volunteering by giving talks at the local Bayswater Clinic on the importance of drug adherence especially around issues of HIV, TB and Blood Pressure and Diabetes.

Further interest is playing the piano (UNISA Grade7) and the ‘wake-up’ piece is Chopin’s Study no 12. When it is played in under 3 minutes it is always a good day!
