Winston S. Churchill - The Second World War - 5 Volumes.
Vol. I - The Gathering Storm. This volume is devoted to an examination of the events which led Britain to a point where war with Germany became once more inevitable; to the drama surrounding the actual outbreak; and to the first eight months which ended in Mr. Churchill becoming Prime Minister.
Vol II - Their Finest Hour. "The story of the late war deals with the period between May 1940 and the end of that year. It embraces his first days as Prime Minister, the defeat and fall of France, the evacuation from Dunkirk, the uneasy Summer when the enemy was daily expected upon our shores, and the first gleams of light as the danger of invasion faded and the year closed with Desert Victory..."
Vol. III - The Grand Alliance. "I cannot recall any period," he writes, "when the stresses (of the war) and the onset of so many problems all at once or in rapid succession bore more directly on me and my colleagues than the first half of 1941." ... Though there is much drama in this volume - the heroic and so-nearly successful defense of Crete, and the hunting of the Bismarck are both unforgettable epics, its chief interest for the reader will most probably be the mass of documents and information, given by Mr Churchill for the first time, which show how, step by arduous, hard-fought, and often unseen and undramatic step, Britain's account was drawn out of the red and her final victory, with her new Allies, assured."
Vol. IV - The Hinge of Fate. Churchill has called this volume The Hinge of Fate because in it the Western powers turn from almost uninterrupted defeat to almost unbroken success. For the first six months everything went well. And as he says in his preface, this agreeable change continued till the end of the struggle.
Vol. V. - Unfortunately, this one is missing!
Vol VI. Triumph and Tragedy. This volume covers the whole of the tremendous climax from the Anglo-American landings in Normandy on June 6th 1944 until the surrender of all our enemies fourteen months later - a period which saw: D-Day and of the invasion of Europe; The Bombardment of Britain by VI's and Rockets; The Martyrdom of Warsaw; Victory of Burma; The Yalta Conference; The Death of Roosevelt; The Murder of Mussolini; The Suicide of Hitler; The unconditional surrender of Germany; The Potsdam Conference; The use of the Atom Bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki; The Unconditional surrender of Japan.
