A Wired Magnetic Contact Switch (often called a reed switch) is one of the most fundamental, reliable, and widely used components in security and automation systems. They are primarily used to detect the opening and closing of doors, windows, gates, or drawers.
A standard wired magnetic contact set consists of two separate, non-electrical pieces:
When the door/window is closed: the magnet is positioned directly adjacent to the reed switch. The magnetic field pulls the internal metal reeds together, completing the electrical circuit. In standard security setups, this is known as a normally closed (NC) circuit.
When the door/window is opened: As the magnet moves away, the magnetic field breaks. The internal reeds spring apart, breaking the electrical circuit. The control panel detects this drop in continuity and triggers an alert or action.
