This, the second volume in the Anglo-Boer War Reprint Library, is Frederic Ungers refreshing personal account of the war. Unger, an American freelance journalist, came to southern Africa in search of adventure and history in the making and found both. Despite endless battles with officialdom, he eventually found himself in the unique situation of holding full correspondents passes from both the Boer and British armies.

He travelled widely, developing a sympathy and admiration for the Boers. Of particular interest is his description of Machadodorp when it was the capital of the Transvaal and his interview with President Kruger just prior to Krugers departure for the Netherlands. His account is largely impartial and his personal experiences yield a fresh slant on a fascinating phase in South Africas history.
