**One of the best-known cartoonists in South Africa.**
Nanda Soobben has been plying his trade for the last 25 years. Yet, most people only got to see his work in the mainstream newspapers in the last few years, thanks to transformation and the insight of Kaizer Nyatsumba.

Over the years, Soobben has illustrated **"everybody who is anybody"**, from politicians to presidents and sports stars. Our ex-president has a collection of Mandela cartoons, which was purchased by Anant Singh and given to him on his birthday.

Although he flirted between sign writing and cartooning in **the bad old days**, he is now very definitely established as one of the best cartoonists in this country and has worked for many newspapers, including **Post Natal, Natal Witness, Sunday World, Independent on Saturday, Daily News, and ThisDay.**

Soobben has lived in Brazil and the US and studied at the **Parsons School of Design in New York and the San Francisco Art Institute.** He exhibited extensively while abroad, but his most talked-about exhibition was held in Durban during the apartheid era. It was called:

**"Cato Manor - People Were Living There!"**
It was about forced removals and the Group Areas Act.

Soobben gave a talk at the **World Affairs Council in San Francisco** titled:
**"My Life As A Black Political Cartoonist In Apartheid South Africa."**

He also painted the mural for **Eco 92 in Rio de Janeiro** and a peace mural in **New York**, which was the subject of a documentary on **ABC Television.**

Soobben is the founder and creative director of **The Centre For Fine Art Animation & Design (CFAD),** an art school in Durban.
