POST WAR ERA (1935-1965) WMF GERMANY NEUSILBER MILK PITCHER IN AMAZING CONDITION

A WMF (WURTTEMBERGISCHE METALLWARENFABRIK) GEISLINGEN GERMANY (1935-1965) ERA SILVERPLATED NEUSILBER (NS mark for nickel silver which is a designation of the base metal used for silvering or silverplate) MILK PITCHER.

WITH A SWIRL-FLUTED VASE BODY WITH CAST C-SCROLL HANDLE ON INTEGRAL RAISED AND CAST LEAFY-SCROLL FEET.

RELATIVE LARGE MILK PITCHER (12CM WIDE SPOUT TO HANDLE 13CM HIGH)

CONDITION: IN AMAZING CONDITION FOR THEIR AGE. NO DENTS. NO DAMAGE. SILVERPLATE WELL TAKEN CARE OF WITH NO VISIBLE PATINA.

MARKINGS: WMF PLACED IN AN ARCH WITH THE LETTERS NS TO THE LEFT OF IT
MARKINGS:
A variety of marks have been used during their 150 years of production.  The well known 'ostrich' mark originates from the German word for ostrich, 'Der Strauss' after Daniel Straub, one of the founders. The 'G' in the mark stands for the town of Geislingen, on the River Fils and near Ulm in Baden-Württemburg.
FROM 1920, WMF INTRODUCED THE NEW SMALL MARK FOR SILVER-PLATED ITEMS, CONTAINING A SPECIAL 2D COMBINATION OF THREE LETTERS, "W", "M", AND "F", PLACED IN A RECTANGLE (1920-1930). THE SAME 2D COMBINATION OF THESE THREE LETTERS, PLACED IN A PARTLY DASHED ARCH, WAS TURNED TO ACCOUNT AS THE MAIN MARK FOR SILVER-PLATED ITEMS FOR NEXT FIVE YEARS (1930-1935). FINALLY, THE SAME 2D COMBINATION OF THREE LETTERS, "W"", "M", AND "F", BUT PLACED IN AN "EMPTY" ARCH, WAS USED IN 1935-1965.

THIS MEANS OUR MILK PITCHER SET WAS PRODUCED DURING THE WORLD WAR 2 ERA BETWEEN 1935-1965.

NS NEUSILBER: NS means neusilber (alpacca), that is an indication of a base metal for silver plating.
Nickel silver, new silver, alpaca silver is actually a copper alloy. The usual formulation is 60% copper, 20% nickel and 20% zinc. Nickel silver does not contain the element silver and is named for its silvery appearance, which can make it attractive as a cheaper and more durable substitute.

HISTORY: WMF (Würtemburgische Machin Fabrik) (1853-current)
WMF (originally Würtemburgische Machin Fabrik AG),originally founded in 1853 in Geislingen an der Steige, Germany.  In 1880 there was an amalgamation of Straub & Sohn and A Ritter & Co. and the factory became famous for domestic and art metalware with an appropriate change of name to Würtemburgische Metallwaren Fabrik AG.  After 170 years the company is still in business and is world famous for their high quality silverware.

SPECIAL TECHNIQUE: In 1892 WMF developed a special technique for silver plating, whereby the silver is distributed in a way that, at the points most exposed to wear and tear, the coating is twice as thick as elsewhere. This process was patented and is still in use today. Known nowadays as 'Perfect Hard Silver plating' the technique remains exclusive to WMF and only a few know its secret.
