THOMAS BAINES: John Thomas Baines (27 November 1820 8 May 1875) was one of the most prolific artists who painted in South Africa in the mid-19th century. He left England for South Africa and arrived in Cape Town on 23 November 1842. He worked first as a painter for a cabinet-maker in Cape Town, and later as a marine and portrait painter. Baines based himself in the Eastern Cape between 1848 and 1853 and from there he undertook three journeys to the interior. His first journey was beyond the Orange River (1848), beyond the Kei River and over the Winterberg (1849) and an attempt to reach the Okavango Swamps (1850). He became South Africas first official war artist and recorded the Eighth Frontier War (1850-1853). Baines is known for his detailed paintings and sketches which give a unique insight into colonial life in southern Africa. CARLTON HOTEL: The Carlton Hotel is a historic hotel in the Central Business District of Johannesburg, South Africa. It opened in 1972 and closed a meer 30 years later in 1998. The hotel was grand, by all accounts, it had 31 storeys, more than 600 rooms, a rooftop pool, and several fancy restaurants and shops. Only the richest South Africans could afford to stay there. Less than 30 years later, in 1998, the Carlton Hotel was closed and mothballed as the CBD collapsed around it. The Carlton has never re-opened.
AFRICANA MUSEUM: This massive steel structure, built in 1913, was designed by the town engineer G.S. Burt Andrews. It was manufactured in Britain and is a fine example of industrial architecture. The Newtown Market Building ceased to operate in 1974. From 1976 it was used and redeveloped by the Africana Museum, which reopened in 1994 a Museum Africa. BUFFALO WEAVERS: Red-billed buffalo weavers breed in colonies. The nests are composed of an enormous mass of thorny twigs. These twigs are divided into separate lodges (compartments), each with multiple egg chambers. Red-billed Buffalo Weavers are polygynous (the breeding practice of a male breeding with more than one female at the same time) and colonial. A typical male Red-billed Buffalo Weaver will have up to eight nest chambers and numerous females.
