SPOON COLLECTING:
The very first souvenir spoon that was issued in the United States of America was a commemorative to George Washington. It was made in the year 1889 by a company called Galt & Brothers in the nations capital of Washington, DC, the spoon was designed to celebrate the 100th anniversary of our first president George Washington and it featured a well designed likeness of his image. It was such a success that is was followed in 1890 by a commemorative spoon called the Salem Witch Spoon.
Soon the craze of spoon collecting was exported to almost every country in the world. There are many beautiful souvenir spoons of state capitals and national landmarks. Thousands and thousands of souvenir spoons were sold in every city, town, village and hamlet throughout a country and there was virtually no section of the nation that was not consumed by the desire and fun of collect souvenir spoons.
Throughout the 20th century, with the exploding middle class, almost everyone could take a vacation. Even the poor could afford a day at an near by lake, mountain, or beach, some even had the choice of an amusement park like the exciting Coney Island. So I guess you could thank the Industrial Age for the Souvenir Spoon Hobby of today.The souvenir spoon rampage lasted up to the 1980s with the exception of the World War years.
In todays world souvenir spoon collecting is still a loved and fascinating hobby. For some of us it is even addictive avocation. The many reasons for collecting souvenir spoon are as diversified as the many remarkable types of souvenir spoons that have been made. There are countless spoons with portraits of famous individuals from writers, musicians, politicians, even war heroes. Often the image in the bowl such as a flower or a detailed masterpiece is what the collector is after. The introduction of embossed designs in souvenir spoons started in 1891, and the production of exquisite enameled spoons which today are considered by most collectors as miniature works of art.
