Wonderful Victorian, Gilt Vinaigrette (1849)
This lovely, early Victorian, unusually shaped vinaigrette, in the shape of a pocket watch, still has its original sponge inside. It has a plain, round case with a hinged lid and attractive hinged grill with a pierced star-cut and engraved pattern. There's a faintly engraved name and date across the back, the name I can't decipher but the date is 1849. I believe this is a very early, lovely French piece with a wonderful thick gilding, and although I'm not sure what the base metal is, I've confirmed it's not gold or silver, with my jeweller. The vinaigrette is in great condition for its age and measures 42mm in diameter, 60mm top to bottom and weighs 27,6g.
