Wooden Hand Carved African Giraffe Mask

Size: 22 cm

An unusual African hand carved wooden Giraffe mask that originates from Kenya and is hand carved by the Maasai (Masai) Mara tribal people. The African Giraffe mask is 22 cm tall and carved with the natural shape of the African Giraffe face and then hand painted. This African Giraffe mask has become a favorable choice for many African collectors and sits well with the Zebra mask that is hand carved in the same realistic animal style. To view the zebra mask return to our mask gallery.

The Maasai (Masai) tribesmen that carved this wooden Giraffe mask are predominantly a warrior tribe whose lives revolve around herding cattle. One of their beliefs is that God entrusted His cattle to them. Thus, they measure their wealth by the number of cattle they acquire. The Maasai (Masai) warrior is a tall and slender man often seen clutching a spear in one hand with his red cloth wrapped around his waist or over his shoulders and jumping on one spot for ages.

African masks have become symbolic with many tribes around Africa and the Maasai (Masai) have used their colorful daily living colors in the designers of their masks. The Maasai (Masai) carvers are very respectful to the earthly animals and their masks designs will often be designed with an animal in mind.
