I find that in order to keep the spine straight, it is very important to get the knees lower than the butt. Many people struggle to do this when they are sitting cross legs and many people find it impossible to sit on their knees for extended periods. The benches are specially made for keeping your posture during meditation and to take the pressure off the knees. You can use the benches for sitting cross legs or for sitting in seiza (on your knees). 

Ideal for Meditation, Reiki, Qi Gong, Shamanic Work, and/or any time you need to sit on the floor for extended periods of time.
