Step into a magical woodland where fairies, woodland creatures and enchanting adventures come to life in Woodland Frolics, the third beautifully illustrated fairy tale collection by South African-born artist and author Doreen Baxter. First published in 1952 by The Brockhampton Press, this charming children's classic showcases Baxter's distinctive artistic style, blending delicate full-colour and black-and-white illustrations with whimsical storytelling that captivated young readers during the golden age of illustrated children's books.
Each page transports readers into an idyllic fantasy world filled with fairies, woodland animals and imaginative adventures, making this an increasingly desirable collectible for enthusiasts of vintage illustrated children's books, fairy tale literature and mid-century book illustration. Baxter's books have become especially sought after by collectors due to their relatively modest print runs and the exceptional quality of her artwork, with Woodland Frolics forming part of her celebrated "Frolics" series alongside Fairyland Frolics and Dreamland Frolics.
This is the true first edition (1952) and remains a highly displayable example thanks to the remarkably fresh and clean internal pages. The illustrations retain excellent colour and clarity, while the text block remains unusually well preserved for a children's book of this age. Despite significant wear to the original dust jacket, the book itself presents as an attractive collector's copy and offers a wonderful opportunity to acquire one of Doreen Baxter's increasingly scarce illustrated works at an accessible price.
Woodland FrolicsĀ is a delightful addition to any collection of vintage children's literature, fairy tales, illustration, or South African artists, Woodland Frolics continues to charm readers more than seventy years after its publication.
Condition - Good
Original dust jacket is heavily worn with extensive tears, large chips, creasing, edge loss, spine-end loss, splitting, rubbing and old tape repairs to the reverse. Cloth boards remain clean and structurally sound with light edge rubbing and minor bumping. Endpapers show tape residue and offsetting from the jacket repairs. Text block is firm and complete. Pages are exceptionally clean with only light scattered foxing to preliminaries, while the text and illustrations are remarkably bright, crisp and virtually flawless throughout.
