Upon its original release in 1969 the film won the Best Documentary Oscar for its depiction of the unique communal experience of the Woodstock Music & Art Festival held in Bethel, New York in that year. Among the musical performance highlights are those from Joe Cocker, Sly Stone, Ten Years After and The Who. The film, which was originally part edited by Martin Scorsese was re-visited in 1994 for the Director's Cut treatment. It is this version that is presented on the DVD release, plus another forty minutes of previously unseen footage, featuring performances by Canned Heat, Jefferson Airplane and the late and greats Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix. Experience the event that named a generation in this intimate look at the outdoor rock festival from preparation through cleanup, with historic access to insiders, blistering concert footage, and portraits of the concert goers. Both negative and positive aspects are shown, from drug use by performers to naked fans sliding in the mud, from the collapse of the fences by the unexpected hordes to the surreal arrival of National Guard helicopters with food and medical assistance for the impromptu city of 500,000.
