Number 180080 Name J Myron - Sapper in the 1st Field Company SAEC
James Myron was born in Scotland on the 26th of December 1906.At some point James moved to Durban , Natal , where he was a carpenter by trade.
From 1926 to 1929 he was in the Durban Light Infantry, a reknowned Scottish Regiment of Durban.
A few months after the start of the Second World War, James volunteered for active service in the United Defence Force, 1st Field Company SAEC, joining up on the 14th of February 1940, at the age of 33 years old.
Early on in his service at Mombasa, he was promoted to Acting Lance Corporal but reverted to Sapper at his own request, once disembarking at Port Suez on the 16th of June 1941.
In 1942 he spent 21 days in the Detention barracks for what appears to be for having gone AWOL, when given 7 days leave.
Througout his service, James was admitted numerous times to hospitals for illness, even returning to South Africa in 1943 and being admitted to the hospital at Barberton.While out here , he did his Carpenter Trade Test for the UDF at Sonderwater , passing with an A
6 months after disembarking again at Port Suez ,after his time back in South Africa, James was posted to the 41st Harbour Construction Compnay in Italy on the 21st of August 1944, where he remained until returning to South Africa after the war in July 1945.
He was discharged in the 24th of August 1945, being awarded the 1939 1945 Star, Africa Star with 8th Army Clasp, Italy Star , War Medal and Africa Service Medal.
