On offer this rare and highly collectible antique WW1 brass embossed box that was sent to Allied Soldiers when Britain went to war against the Axis in 1914. On the lid it is embossed with "Imperium Brittanicum" and "Christmas 1914". Along the corners and border the names of the countries: "Begium, Japan, Monte Negro, Servia, France, Russia" and a picture of Princess Mary in the centre. It measures 13x9x3cm. Still in good condition and the hinged lid opens and closes perfectly.
Christmas 1914 was unique. There was general optimism that the war which started in Aug 1914 would be over soon and troops would be home for Christmas. When it became evident that troops would spend Christmas away from home, during November 1914, an advertisement was placed in the national press inviting monetary contributions to a "Sailors and Soldiers Christmas Fund", which had been created by Princess Mary, the 17 year old daughter of King George V and Queen Mary. The fund's purpose was to provide everyone who would be wearing the King's uniform on Christmas 1914 with a "gift from the nation". The response was overwhelming and it was decided to spend the money on an embossed brass box, based on a design by Messrs Adshead and Ramsey. Contents varied from tabocco, cigarettes, cake, sweets, spices, chocolates, depending who it was sent to. Great efforts were made to distribute the boxes in time for Christmas and 355 000 were successfully delivered.
