For your consideration is a very rare and emblematic Baroque/Rococo tobacco box
It is made by the workshop of the renown mid 18th century engraver Johann Heinrich Giese (1716-1761) from Iserlohn, Germany
In the 18th century, the town became known for its "Iserlohn boxes", tobacco or snuff boxes with engraved and embossed lids, such as the one presented here
Ornate embossed brass top and bottom with exquisitely detailed and very complicated figural Maritime and domestic scenes, detailing the thriving in the period Colonial trade , The body is silver plated copper
The top displays allegorical representations of the four continents - Europa, Africa, Asia and America, as well as two images related to the Dutch text under it, one with ships arriving at a shore and greeted by a native, the other - a bucolic scene of people drinking and smoking around a table
There are also scrolls and foliage and variety of heraldry symbols, lions, coats of arms etc.
Circa mid 18th century, 1750-1760. Made in the town of Iserlohn, Germany for export to Netherlands to be used by seamen engaged in the Dutch Colonial trade
