The Intel Santa Rosa-based Lenovo 3000 N200 laptop delivers decent power and plenty of creature comforts at an attractive price ($1,099 base price; $1,599 for our test configuration). You don't get much in the way of style or multimedia sophistication, but office professionals and business users will appreciate its solid performance and extra features.

Our review unit came with a gorgeous 15.4-inch glossy wide-screen display with a 1,680x1,050 native resolution (a 1,280x800-resolution panel comes standard in most laptops). Above the screen, you'll find an integrated Webcam. The LCD delivered a sharp, vivid image with excellent brightness and color saturation. Fonts at default settings were a touch on the small side, but enabling large fonts and upping the zoom level in applications is a small price to pay for fitting more of a given app window onscreen.

In DVD playback, the screen did exhibit motion blur, and volume from the integrated speakers was weak. Using the Media Center suite included with the Windows Vista Ultimate operating system was less than ideal for playing DVDs. For starters, pressing a volume button would momentarily blank the screen. Worse, the DVD drive spun faster and slower throughout the entire movie, which made the annoying racket hard to ignore. When we downloaded CyberLink's PowerDVD software player and used that to watch a movie instead, the screen-blanking problem disappeared, and the DVD drive's noise level fell to a low, constant hum.

The Lenovo 3000 N200 has a full-size keyboard that's quiet and comfortable. Above it, you'll find dedicated volume and mute buttons, but no dedicated multimedia-playback control keys. Business users will appreciate the notebook's handy Lenovo Care launch button, which offers one-touch system recovery from crashes or viruses, as well as access to security features, networking options, system-maintenance utilities, and software updates. You also get a built-in fingerprint scanner for added security.

At the front edge of the case is an on/off switch for the N200's built-in Bluetooth and 802.11a/g/n Wi-Fi connectivity. On the right are headphone and mic jacks, three USB 2.0 ports, a double-layer DVD burner, and a VGA out; the left side hosts another USB 2.0 port, a mini-FireWire port, an Ethernet jack, an ExpressCard slot, and a flash-memory-card reader. The back has only an S-Video out, a modem jack, and the power connection, but overall it's a solid lineup of ports.

The nVidia GPU is a step up from integrated graphics, and will handle light 3D gaming if you don't mind dialing back the resolution and eye candy. Our N200 delivered a playable 34 frames per second (fps) on F.E.A.R. at 640x480 resolution with the effects set to a mix of medium and minimum. The GPU easily handled Vista' Aero effects, even with multiple windows open at once. The N200's nine-cell battery, which sticks out about an inch from the back of the unit, lasted just over 2.5 hours on our DVD rundown test; it should last closer to 4 hours in typical use.

All things considered, you won't be disappointed by the Lenovo 3000 N200 when it comes to speed and usability. And if you don't mind an unexciting exterior for your $1,599, this laptop is a fine choice.
