Meiji Period ( 1868 - 1912 ) The inscription reads:
• ¿¿¿ ¿¿ Dai-Nippon, Great Japan, Kaga (the old name of the province where the Kutani kilns are located in Ishikawa Prefecture today);
• ¿¿ ¿¿¿ Kutani Watano-sei (made) [note that the character ¿ no is written in the older form, which I cannot input here];
• ¿¿¿¿ Kitamatsu-ga kore, Kitamatsu drew this (the decorator name, "kore, this" referring to the vase.
The maker ¿¿¿¿ Watano Kichiji lived from ¿¿6¿ Ansei 6th year (1859) to ¿¿9¿ Showa 9th year (1934). In 1877, he succeeded his father, Watano Gen'emon ¿¿¿¿¿¿. He was an exporter; in 1879, he directly exported to Paris, and the following year he established a branch in Yokohama (the major harbor for export). In 1887, he established special kilns at his own estate where decorators kept the high quality works (your decorator worked in this kind environment). In 1900, he visited the Paris World Exposition, and travelled in Europe (the Netherland, Belgium, Germany and Italy, among others).
