The book describes the authors childhood in Cape Towns notorious slum, District Six, and then traces his academic and literary careers. The former gathered momentum after he won a competitive scholarship to high school at the age of thirteen and continued until he had earned degrees from the universities of Cape Town and Columbia, and a doctorate from Oxford for his thesis on the South African writer Olive Schreiner. This often rumbustious, always perceptive autobiography had its origins when the South African writer, Richard Rive, was invited to be the key-note speaker during March 1979 at the prestigious African Literature Association conference at the University of Indiana in Bloomington. His paper received such an ethusiastic response from the academics and writers present that, on the advice of several publishers in South Africa and the United States, he expanded it into the present work.
