Finally, in the tiny West African state of Kangaba, he ground to a halt. Is my work really necessary, he began to wonder, and if so, to whom? The mountain of official papers on his bedside table remained unscaled.

Regina was a pr*stitute who hung around the bar in Kangaba's airport, waiting for tourists to arrive. They slept, spine to spine, in Fuller's hotel bedroom until he decided to follow her into her country's poverty-stricken interior.
