About the Book:
Written on the Body is Jeanette Wintersons most intimate and daring novel a story of love and loss that transcends gender, identity, and the limits of the body itself. Told by a narrator of undisclosed sex, it chronicles an obsessive love affair with Louise, a married woman whose illness turns passion into elegy.
The books language is tactile, poetic, and philosophical exploring how desire inscribes itself upon flesh and memory. The body is a palimpsest, the narrator says, a secret code only visible in certain lights.
In dismantling the conventions of both gender and genre, Winterson makes language itself the site of loves revelation its cruelty, its beauty, and its permanence.
