WW1 7de Zuid Afrikaanse Ruiters Metal Shoulder Title. 1915-1918. Lugs Intact. Excellent condition.
After the formation of the Union of South Africa in 1910, the Union Defence Force (UDF) was established in 1912. By the outbreak of WWI in 1914, the UDF included several mounted rifle units and commandos (derived from the old Boer military system). These mounted units were well-trained, mobile, and effective in African terrain. Many former Boer fighters, including veterans of the Second Anglo-Boer War, served in these units. South African mounted troops played a central role in defeating German forces in the German South West Africa Campaign and the East African Campaign. These units were either originally Boer commandos or colonial regiments and evolved into professional units under the UDF.
