This very early, military issue, all brass Abney level/clinometer was manufactured in England around 1907 by 'T. Cooke & Sons.' This lovely instrument comes in its original leather case complete with strap. The 'broad arrow' (military issue), with the letters 'F.D.' are marked on the front of the leather case and are engraved or scratched on the side of the brass level along with the impressed makers mark 'T. COOKE & SONS LTD. LONDON & YORK' - this was a well-known English instrument making firm which was founded by Thomas Cooke in 1837. The brass level seems to be working and looks to be in excellent condition. The leather case has a small worn hole on the back, otherwise it's in a very good used condition. The instrument measures 12cm x 5cm and cased 14cm x 6cm.
Note: The clinometer or Abney level was invented in 1870 and called 'The Miniature Theodolite.' Its a handheld optical scientific instrument used in surveying to measure vertical angles.
