The D-shape mess tin was used for the first time during the Napoleonic wars. This mess kit was standard use by the British and Canadian army during WW1 and there after untill replaced in 1937. It was used by other ranks than officer. These mess tins were also used by die Australian army at Galipoli and was manufactured in Australia. The dixie on auction was made by Fischer&Ludlow Ltd in 1915 in Birmingham (see picture of the maker's mark at the bottom of tin)
It was made of galvinised tin or zinc plated with a handle in the lid. (see all pictures)
