WW1 Era 1917 Brass and Hardwood Four-Part Cane Dagger.
An antique cane dagger which unscrews into four sections for easy transport. It assembles and disassembles smoothly and is firm when assembled. The brass collar is engraved "J.P. van Zyl" and dated "1917". In overall, good antique condition with some slight age-appropriate wear.
A concealed walking stick dagger, often referred to as a swordstick or cane dagger, dating to around 1917. When fully assembled, it would have appeared to be an ordinary gentlemans walking cane, discreetly hiding a weapon inside. The dagger features an ornate T-shaped handle made of cast metal, likely brass or gilt bronze, decorated with floral and foliate relief typical of late Victorian to Edwardian design. Attached to the handle is a slender, straight, double-edged blade intended primarily for thrusting rather than cutting, a common characteristic of concealed defensive weapons of this type. The cane itself is constructed from polished hardwood, probably stained to resemble mahogany or rosewood, and is made in multiple threaded sections that screw together, allowing for easier transport and concealment. Brass collars reinforce the joints, and the rubber ferrule at the base helps protect the wood while enhancing the illusion of a conventional walking stick. By 1917, swordsticks were increasingly restricted in many countries and had fallen out of fashion, but they were still carried by some civilians and officers for personal protection. Overall, this piece represents an elegant yet practical gentleman's weapon from the early twentieth century, combining craftsmanship, discretion, and utility.
