The Meritorious Service medal was normally given to NCOs for long service, but near the end of the First World War, they were also awarded for Acts of service or Valour. Since Groat was just a lance corporal when he was awarded the MSM, it's likely he was awarded it for a single action rather than long service. His medal card (See last pic) unfortunately doesn't say what this act may have been.
