EJ Whitbread was a prominent figure in the Battle of Delville Wood during World War I, serving in the South African Brigade. He was awarded the Military Medal for his gallantry at Delville Wood. Specifically, he was the Adjutant of the 3rd (Cape Town) Regiment, 1st South African Infantry Brigade
