WW1 - Memorial Death Plaque (Arthur E.D. Hoggan)
This original, bronze, WW1 Memorial plaque is named to 'Arthur Edward David Hoggan' who gave his life in the Great War. According to the 'Commonwealth War Graves' site and a little research, Corporal A.E.D. Hoggan, service number '9241', served with the 3rd Regiment of the South African Infantry and died at the tender age of 23. He died on the 20thof September 1917 in Ypres (Leper) in West Flanders, Belgium and is Commemorated at the 'Menin Gate' Memorial in Ypres. I came across his group of three WW1 medals on the internet which sold at an auction house in 2013.
NOTE: The WW1 Memorial Plaque, also referred to as the Death Penny or Dead Mans Penny, was awarded to the next of kin of service personnel who had died during the Great War.
