The British Ordnance 13-pounder field gun was a rapid-firing light artillery piece introduced in 1904 and prominently utilized by the British Royal Horse Artillery during World War I.

Early during WW1 the Wartime service primarily relied on a shrapnel shell configurations of the 76.2mm (3-inch) calibre projectile, each weighing when filled approximately 13 pounds (5.9 kg).

Shrapnel Shells was the most common type used during the early stages of WWI. It featured a forged steel casing packed with exactly 234 lead balls. The fuze could be set to detonate the shell in mid-air above advancing infantry, acting like a giant shotgun blast, or explode instantly on impact.
