Father and Son medal groups

8738 PTE Richard William Cooper

Richard William Cooper attested into the 1st Mounted Rifles as E 3198 Tpr and served in GSWA from the 22/08/1914 until the 23/07/1915 when he was then discharged at the end of the successful campaign.

He then attested into the 10th SAl on the 17/01/1916 for service with the South African expeditionary forces in German East Africa as 8738 Pte.

His personal details as noted on his attestation papers are;

Prior service: 6 years with the Natal Carbineers

His service in GEA was to be short lived as he contracted malaria at Kalossa in September 1916, he was admitted to hospital in Dar-es-Salaam and spent 18 days here. He was then RTU and arrived in Durban on the 21/12/1916 and  declared unfit for further duty being discharged on the 26/02/1917.

His 1914-15 star was despatched on the 18/12/1920 and the BWM and VIC on the 22/02/1922.

544146 PTE Desmond Lancelot Cooper

Desmond Lancelot Cooper attested into the SAAF as 544146 Pte in Pietermaritzburg on the 29/05/1942 at the age of 17 years.

Cooper what appointed armourer on the 03/03/1943

Whilst he was in the Middle East he was attached to the RAF. This was from the 11/08/1944 and he remained there until being posted to 34 squadron on the 25/07/1945. Cooper was RTU on the 02/12/1945 and struck off strength of the SAAF and posted to A/A Wentworth, Durban on the 18/01/1946. Finally discharged on the 29/01/1946.
