WW11 Group. 1939-45 Star/Italy Star/Defence Medal/WM & ASM officially named to 589578 H.B BOTES. Originally from the Transvaal, Botes transferred across to the 1st R.N.C and embarked for service in the Middle East in September 1943. By October 1944 Botes found himself staring up the slopes of Monte Stanco, Italy facing the II and III Battalions of the 36th SS Regiment. It was on the 10th that the Carbineers were totally overwhelmed by the fanatical determination of the German troops and forced to withdrawal off Monte Stanco. It was during this evacuation that Capt. JP Edmonds won the American Silver Star. Unfortunately, not all could be saved and it was during this desperate struggle that Botes was killed. His body was later recovered and buried in the Castiglione South African Cemetery. Included service papers confirm medal entitlement. Lot contains pages of research reflecting path taken by the SA Forces as well as extracts from the RNC War Diaries in regards to this specific action. Cap badge also included. No overseas bidders please unless destination and banking is located within SA.
