Correctly named and only entitlement WW11 medal groups to husband and wife - Van der Spuy. Garfield August Van Der Spuy was born in Paarl on 21.10.1921. As a 19 year old Clerk he attested into Active Service on 28.05.1941 with service number 582611 in the Railways & Harbour Brigade. He was classified as having a Medical Category A1 and would remain in the Union. He was promoted to Cpl. on 03.11.1942 and attached to the 24th A/Tank Batt. SAA with the R & H Regt. in Carolina and later Mapleton. He was posted to Divisional HQ in Pretoria “Q” Service Corps on 25.01.1943 and promoted to Sgt. on 01.05.1944. He got married to Anna Fourie on the 02.05.1944. Garfield was discharged as a Category B on 14.03.1946. He died in Durban on 14.05.1994. Anne Willemina Susanna Van Der Spuy (nee Fourie) was born in Oudshoorn on 29.10.1924. As a 17 year old Factory Hand she attested into Active Service on 05.12.1941 in the Womens Auxiliary Army Service Corps (WAAS) at Voortrekker Hoogte with service number 306069. She was discharged on 12.03.1945 due to Urgent Private Affairs (pregnancy). She died in Pietermaritzburg on 17.07.2009 her ashes being placed at the Grasdak Kerk in Paarl along with her husband’s.
