ON AUCTION IS THIS WW2 1944 BOFORS 40MM BRASS SHELL CASING BASE FEATURING A GERMAN NORDDEUTCHER LLOYD BREMEN BUTTON AS CENTREPIECE.

The Bofors 40mm anti-aircraft gun was one of the most widely used medium-range anti-aircraft weapons of World War II. There rounds were actively manufactured and deployed by both Allied forces (including the US, Britain, and Canada) and Axis powers. 

German Norddeutscher Lloyd (NDL) Bremen buttons are highly sought-after maritime and historical collectibles. These uniform buttons represent one of the most famous German shipping companies in history, known for its iconic vessels like the Bremen. The face of the button consists of a crossed anchor and key (taken from the Bremen city coat of arms) surrounded by a wreath. 

Norddeutcher Lloyd was a major German shipping company founded in Bremen in 1857. It served as a vital carrier for the German Navy, notably providing auxiliary cruisers and armed merchant vessels during the World Wars.During World War I and World War II, the German Navy (Kriegsmarine) requisitioned NDL's fast passenger liners to convert them into armed auxiliary cruisers (Hilfskreuzer) and commerce raiders. Norddeutscher Lloyd ships, including the Bremen (built in the 1920s) were utilized by the German military as barracks ships and troop transports during WWII.

Launched in 1928, the SS Bremen was one of the most advanced, streamlined turbine liners of its era. On its maiden voyage in 1929, it broke the transatlantic speed record, crossing from Cherbourg to New York in just 4 days and 17 hours to capture the coveted Blue Riband. Ordered back to Germany at the outbreak of WWII, the Bremen successfully evaded British cruisers and reached Murmansk in 1939 before slipping into Bremerhaven. In 1941, while serving as a barracks ship, it was destroyed by a fire reportedly started by a disgruntled crew member.
