WW2 AFS Mk2 Brodie helmet with liner and chinstrap. The Auxiliary Fire Service was a civilian organization that was formed in the UK during World War II to supplement the work of the National Fire Service. The AFS helmet is a modified version of the military Brodie helmet and it has a white painted AFS on the front to identify it as a fire fighting helmet. The AFS played a critical role in firefighting during the Blitz, and the organization was staffed by volunteers who worked long hours to protect civilians and property from the bombing raids. The AFS was eventually merged with the National Fire Service in 1941. This particular Brodie helmet was actually produced in South Africa and exported to the UK. Britain ran short of helmets, and South Africa picked up production to export to Britain. The helmet is unmarked, but has the telltale feature of 3 holes along the rear side for attaching a neck protector - unique to SA Mk2 Brodie helmets. The helmet is complete, and in relatively good condition for its age. Great piece of history.
