Guaranteed full size and original Distinguished Flying Cross. DFCs are not normally named, but this has been privately engraved to Flt Lt DC Borland, 266 Squadron. This is definitely the actual DFC he was awarded as it was bought directly from a family member. Unfortunately the rest of his medals were lost over time. He was also entitled to the following medals:
ssSince he was in the Royal Air Force, all the missing medals would've been unnamed, so it is possible to get replacements.
Ft Lt Borland was born in Nylstroom South Africa. He worked at Nkana Mine, Northern Rhodesia before signing up for the Royal Airforce in May 1941. He trained in Rhodesia and then served in 266 (Rhodesian) Squadron of the Royal Air Force from April 1942. Him and his brother, Noel Vincent Borland, were the only set of twins to have served in the same RAF Squadron during WW2.
Douglas Borland was one of 4 officers of 266 Squadron to be awarded the distinguished flying cross in 1945, the citation reads: This officer has led his flight on many successful attacks against enemy communication, transport and military installations. His fine leadership, tenacity of purpose and great keenness are reflected in a score of nearly 400 enemy fighting vehicles being destroyed or damaged by his squadron since D-Day.
Doug Borland and the Borland twins are mentioned several times in the book, A Pride of Eagles, a History of the Rhodesian Air Force. By Beryl Salt.
