The Free French Air Forces (FAFL - Forces Aériennes Françaises Libres) were established by Charles de Gaulle in July 1940 as the aerial component of the Free French forces, operating alongside the British Royal Air Force (RAF). They consisted of exiled French personnel and volunteers who refused the 1940 armistice, fighting from 19401943 against Axis powers before merging into the unified French Air Army.
