Title: WW2 South African UDF Pilots Safe Conduct Pass Document North Africa Campaign.
Height: 26.0cm.
Width: 17.5cm.
Info: A very rare Safe Conduct document produced on a waterproof woven linen paper sheet that is durableĀ  enough for South African UDF pilots to carry during the North Africa Campaign (1940-3) in case of being lost or captured over Egypt or Libya and other North African countries.
Written for the benefit of Commonwealth and British personnel in the field, the focus is simple and concise. The first paragraph, in English and Arabic, presents a simple greeting asking for hospitality. The following gives points of conduct, such as "remove footwear before entering their tents" and "do not expect breakfast if you sleep the night. Arabs will give you a mid-day or evening meal". A word list includes translations of "friend", "food", "tired", and "enemy".
The document was colloquially known as a "goolie chit", a "throwback from an earlier war when Royal Flying Corps pilots in India and Mesopotamia needed security in the form of a document that promised a reward to anyone who would bring a British aviator back to British lines.
The Safe Passage Document is part of the Militaria Collection of Lt Col AD Irvine who served in the Union Defence Force in North Africa and Europe during WW2 and for the South African Air Force.
Condition: Very Good, the Safe Passage document has been left untouched, as received, it is still very legible, with 1 x 4mm hole in the centre, with folds.
Price: R 6750.00 Inc Vat.
