WW2 - SAAF Fighter Pilots 'Horse Sweeney's' Korean War Medals

This impressive collection belonged to the late 'James Mackenzie Sweeney', a WW2 'South African Air Force' Fighter pilot who went by the name of 'Horse Sweeney'. There's a lovely tribute to him with numerous photographs and an impressive write-up on his military career and experiences, on the 'SAAF WW2 HERITAGE SITE' (https://saafww2pilots.yolasite.com/horse-sweeney.php) on the internet. This lovely collection includes seven, amazing quality 'Korean War Veteran' medals, (full size & miniatures) with their ribbons, all beautifully boxed in their blue and red velvet hinged cases. There are also photographs, documents, an Official Proclamation to Mr. Sweeney, headed, 'AMBASSADOR FOR PEACE', a lovely glass, boxed paperweight, and a super book with colourful illustrations, on all the monuments for the UN's participation in the Korean War. The medals are all in excellent condition and appear to be made of brass or a heavy gilded metal.

Note: Mr. Sweeney joined the SAAF in early 1941 and was originally selected for bomber pilot training, but later became a fighter pilot. He was sent to the Middle East where he joined up with No. 2 Fighter Squadron. He flew operations in North Africa in a Kittyhawk aircraft. In 1943 the squadron moved to Italy where he flew operations in a Spitfire aircraft. Due to an unfortunate crash landing, his tour was cut short, and he spent several months in hospital to recover from his injuries. In 1951 he participated in an operational tour to Korea with No. 2 Squadron as part of an American formation. Again, he was wounded in action and sent back to SA. After the Korean War he had a long and successful career in civil aviation.
