WW2 - Scarce SAAF/RAF 'Fighter Squadron' Silver Badge/Pin (Black Panther)
This original, scarce, solid silver WW2 'Fighter Squadron' Air Force badge or pin was attached to a handwritten note (see below), from a soldier, which was sent to his parents during WW2. The note describes in detail the badge, it's shape, emblem, motto etc. It's a very good quality made pin in the shape of a 'spearhead', with a raised 'Black Panthers' head in the middle and is stamped 'SILVER' and 'DARTON' which I presume is the maker, on the back. I've searched the net and have been unable to identify this pin or brooch and can only presume it's a rare piece, as I've found nothing similar. I'm guessing that it's either a S.A.A.F or R.A.F pin, and possibly even a sweetheart brooch.
The note, in regard to the badge reads 'Have enclosed a Squadron Broach - Spearhead stands for Fighter Squadron and the Black Panther our emblem', with a Latin motto in brackets 'PARDUS VIGILANS PERCUSSIT'.The pin is in excellent condition, measures 30mm x 16mm and weighs 4,8g.
